Omega-3 short shelf life
In the world of healthy nutrition, omega-3 fatty acids have achieved an almost mythical status. Flaxseed oil in particular contains this golden elixir in abundance, but chia and hemp seed oil are also rich in these unsaturated fatty acids. But what makes these oils so volatile and why do they have such a short shelf life?
The key lies in the chemical structure of omega-3 fatty acids. These polyunsaturated compounds are particularly sensitive to oxygen, light and heat. The process of oxidation begins when the oil is exposed to air and accelerates at higher temperatures and direct sunlight.
This oxidation is not only a degradation process whereby less omega-3 is retained in the product, but it also generates harmful products. Aldehydes and peroxides are just some of the compounds that can form, and they are known to negatively affect the human body. What originally began as a health-promoting food can lose its benefits due to improper storage and extended shelf life.
Flax oil, as the king of omega-3 oils, is particularly vulnerable in this regard. With the highest content of omega-3 fatty acids among vegetable oils, it is a powerful ally for the heart, brain and immune system, but equally a delicate and volatile creature that requires careful handling.
But all is not lost. The trick is to keep the oil as fresh as possible, store it properly and use it quickly. By using dark glass bottles that keep out the light and storing it in the refrigerator, oxidation can be slowed down.
Creative tip: Why not make a ritual out of taking oil? Buy small amounts of flaxseed oil, store them lovingly in the refrigerator, and enjoy a spoonful of the liquid gold daily, perhaps even by candlelight. As you do so, think of the wonders this oil does for your body, and take a moment to connect with nature and your health.
Omega-3 oils are like a sunset: short-lived, but breathtakingly beautiful. By understanding their ephemeral nature and applying creative techniques for care and ingestion, we can get the most out of these wonderful oils while honoring their special character. It's a relationship that requires care, but the rewards are immense, ranging from a healthy body to a deeper connection with the world around us.
